Symptoms

Signs you have a leaking shower

A shower rarely announces itself with a puddle. It shows up as a stain in the next room, or a smell, or grout you have already replaced once. If any of these look familiar, the waterproofing underneath is the thing to look at.

  • Stains on a wall or ceiling

Usually the room or unit below, or the wall backing onto the shower. Water travels, so the stain is rarely under the leak.

  • Mould or mildew that keeps returning

You clean it, it comes back within weeks. That is moisture behind the surface, not a cleaning problem.

  • Loose, drummy or cracked tiles

A tile that sounds hollow underfoot has lost its bond to the bed beneath it, and the grout around it will be next.

  • A musty smell you cannot place

Damp trapped under the floor or behind the wall sheeting. It is the earliest sign, and the one most people ignore.

  • Paint bubbling in the next room

Moisture pushing through from the shower side. By this point the waterproofing has been failing for a while.

  • Grout that keeps falling out

Regrouting the same joint twice means the movement underneath was never dealt with. That is a waterproofing job.

How we fix it

Without taking your bathroom apart

The old way to fix a leaking shower is to demolish it — tiles off, screed out, new membrane, retile. A week without a bathroom, a skip in the driveway, and a tile you probably cannot match any more.

We seal it from the surface instead. A resin and epoxy system goes in through the existing grout lines, travels into the cracks and voids in the bed underneath, and cures into a continuous waterproof barrier. The shower you already have stays exactly as it is.

How resin injection seals a leak without removing tiles Cross-section through a tiled floor. Resin is injected through the grout line, travels into cracks and voids in the substrate below, and cures into a sealed barrier. The tiles are not lifted. Substrate Bed Tiles 1 Injected through the grout line No demolition, no skip bin. 2 Your tiles stay where they are Nothing lifted, nothing matched. 3 Fills the cracks and voids Then cures into a sealed barrier. Resin injection, in cross-section The waterproofing under your tiles has failed — not the tiles on top.

We find it before we price it

The stain in the hallway is rarely under the leak. We trace the entry point and photograph it, so the quote is for the cause rather than the evidence.

Most jobs, no tiles come off

No demolition and no skip bin. Most showers are back in use the same day, and you keep the bathroom you chose.

10 years, in writing

Shower waterproofing carries a 10-year warranty — longer than the 5 years we give on balconies, because a sealed shower is a more contained job. It comes with your invoice.

Sometimes the answer really is a rebuild. If the falls run the wrong way or the bed has broken up, no sealer will hold it, and we would rather tell you that on the day than take your money twice.

Scope

What a shower job covers

Which of these your shower needs comes out of the inspection. Most jobs are one or two of them, not all five.

  • Leak detection

We find the actual entry point before quoting — the failed joint, the perished membrane, the cracked hob or the waste that was never sealed properly.

  • Shower resealing

Resin and epoxy injected through the existing grout lines, sealing the substrate under your tiles without lifting a single one.

  • Tile and grout repairs

Perished grout raked out and replaced, loose tiles re-bedded, silicone junctions cut out and redone properly.

  • Shower waterproofing

A sealed barrier under the tiled surface, warranted for 10 years in writing.

  • Shower restoration

Where the shower is sound but tired — regrout, reseal, re-silicone and a deep clean, so it works and looks like it should.

What to expect

How long it takes, and how long it lasts

Hours

Minor repairs

A failed junction, a section of perished grout, silicone that has given up. In and out the same morning.

A day

A full reseal

The usual job. Injected, sealed, tested and back in use — most people shower in it that night.

10 years

The warranty

On the waterproofing, in writing, with your invoice. If it leaks again inside that time we come back.

Shower questions

What people ask about leaking showers

Do you need to remove my tiles to fix a leaking shower?

On most showers, no. We inject a resin and epoxy sealing system through the existing grout lines; it travels into the cracks and voids in the substrate underneath and cures into a sealed barrier. Your tiles stay exactly where they are. The exception is a shower where the falls run the wrong way or the bed itself has broken up — no sealer fixes that, and we will show you why before recommending the bigger job.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking shower?

We do not publish a shower price, because the honest answer is that it depends on what is actually wrong — and we will not know that until we have looked. What you get is a fixed written price after the on-site inspection, itemised, with no hourly rates and nothing added on the day. The inspection and the quote are free. Call 0424 626 557 and we will book one in.

What is the difference between regrouting and resealing?

Regrouting replaces the grout you can see between the tiles. Resealing waterproofs the layer underneath them. Regrouting a shower that is leaking through a failed membrane will look better for a few months and then leak again — which is why we diagnose first. Plenty of the showers we are called to have already been regrouted once by somebody else.

Why does my grout keep cracking and falling out?

Almost always movement. The bed under the tiles is flexing, or the shower base and the wall are moving against each other at the junction, and rigid cement grout cannot take it. Replacing the grout on its own treats the symptom. We look at what is moving and seal the substrate so it stops mattering.

How long does a shower repair take?

Minor repairs are usually done within a few hours. A full reseal is typically a day. Larger jobs, or a shower that needs the bed rebuilt, run to a few days. We tell you which of those yours is at the inspection, not after we have started.

Will the leak come back?

Not on our watch — shower waterproofing carries a 10-year warranty, supplied in writing with your invoice. If it leaks again inside that period we come back and deal with it.
